Resources for a $200 fortnightly grocery shop

This page details all the resources, tips and ideas I use to feed my family of 3 for around $200 a fortnight.

I do this by being strategic about how we use all our food.

I make sure to:

  • Meal plan
  • Reduce Waste
  • Grow what I can
  • Make what I can

This lifestyle allows me to stay at home and be with my son during the most important years of his life. It allows us to reduce our impact on the environment and have more money for our little luxuries.

Menu Plan

The key to getting the most out of every shop is to know exactly what is in the pantry and how to use the food you will be buying.

There are so many benefits to this:

  • We can do one big shop instead of lots of little shops. This saves us so much money as we aren’t tempted to buy more then we need
  • Planning ahead means that we use up all the food that we buy instead of throwing things out

You don’t have you plan every meal. We plan roughly 10 meals a fortnight. This allows for take away (which we spend our ‘fun money’ on), eating with friends, left overs or scraping from what you have left to create something wonderful. It’s about being mindful about how you use your grocery budget.

I love using the Hipcook app, I save recipes from magazines, friends cookbooks, cookbooks I borrow from the library and even online in this app. In this video I show how to use it.

Reduce Waste

We use Sarah Wilson’s ‘Simplicious*’ philosophy a lot. All bones are saved and frozen until enough have accumulated to make stock. Veggie scraps, if not fed to the chickens, are frozen ready to be add to the stock pot. Things such as tomato paste get frozen in ice cube trays. Here are some of our favourite tips:

It can easy to be overwhelming by growing your own food, especially if you are time poor and have a black thumb.

You can save a lot of money just by having a couple of pots of your favourite herbs.

I’m also a huge advocate of baking your own bread. My loaves cost me about $1 each including flour, salt and electricity. I know there are more frugal options but homemade bread means that I can bake as we need it and I know what’s in the bread. Here’s some sourdough references:
