About Me

Hi, I’m Clare Reilly.

I write this blog to share my adventures in learning to live a simpler life. I share with the hope that our learnings and mistakes might help other families seeking the same lifestyle. It’s not about following the latest craze, it’s about living a simpler, greener and more frugal life. Everyone seeking this route will have a different focus and as you journey down this road that focus may change.

The Life of Clare was born in 2011 when my husband, J and I made the sea change from the ski fields in Victoria to the small coastal town of Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula, in Victoria, Australia.

We were BROKE, having just a few hundred dollars to our name due to our ‘casual’ working status, we were moving across the state AND were heading down to Tasmania for a holiday that we had committed to long ago. After spending a very adventurous, fun and FRUGAL month in Tasmania, we boarded the Spirit of Tasmania and returned home with some dread.

We needed to learn about living on a dime, so we planted some seedlings, right down the back of the ¼ acre house block that we were renting. The satisfaction although not immediate, was immeasurable. We were out there day in, day out; weeding, watering, and caring for our veggies. Finally, we were able to pick some tomatoes here and a capsicum there. The satisfaction of putting vegetables that we had grown into our meals was addictive and slowly the veggie garden started to infiltrate our other beds.

I could feel the focus moving from living a frugal life to living a simple one. We were looking at ways to learn more about where our food was coming from, so logically the next step was to get chickens.

Thankfully now, with five chickens out the back, a new house and a new family member (our son Elliot), money worries aren’t such a concern. We’re hard-core budgeters! However, something that is a concern is protecting this world and the environment. We grow as much as we can, buy local meat and veggies and stock up on pantry staples from the supermarket.

This website is where I share our real food and simple living journey. We make our own beer, bake our own bread, make our own yoghurt and recently had a prosciutto hanging in our shed. I share our successes and mistakes.

I also love sharing tidbits on Instagram and Facebook.

We’re so lucky to be living in an epicentre of fantastic local produce, which I actively research, source and use in place of imported products where we can.

  1. I have just discovered you and must say I love your recipes. They are simple without the zillions of ingredients and steps that are favoured by some others. Thank you as I may cook more often. Also do you I d if I pin to Pinterest as I like to place some of my favourite recipes there. I will ensure all credit goes to you.
