This weekend we had the Easter long weekend. Now, we usually take every opportunity to go away on a holiday, but we’ve had a busy few weekends and we’re off on another adventure next week, so we thought we’d stay at home this weekend. We wanted to stay at home and enjoy a staycation. So here’s my top 5 tips on staycationing. Honestly, I wasn’t very good at following these tips, but I had the weekend to think about it and I think if I’d followed these I would have felt much more holiday-like.
Here are my top tips for the best staycation:
1. Use your imagination!
Think about what you would do if you were staying somewhere that wasn’t your home town. How would you explore a new town or city?
If we were spending a weekend somewhere else we’d go out for breakfast, we’d walk the streets to find cool shops, we’d visit the parks, walk beaches, peruse shops. I’d search out any opshops in a 15 km radius and find a local farmers market.
2. Keep your meals simple.
When your staying somewhere without your fully stocked pantry and freezer you need to keep your meals simple, so why not do this at home. Make it easy for yourself. Plan to have takeaway or eat out for a couple of meals, and then plan the rest of your meals. This means holiday for the brain.
3. Find out what events are happening in your local area.
Search for markets, check out local wineries, cafes, there might be music playing or other special events. In our area there are some great Facebook pages, and even some Instagram accounts dedicated to the Bellarine.
4. Pretend that you are not at home.
Don’t finish those jobs you’ve been meaning to get done, no gardening or cleaning. Don’t do those 3 loads of washing. DO watch a day time movie, take a nap or read a book, enjoy slowing down.
5. No pressure!
It’s your time! If you want to fill your days with all the gardening, if you want to cook an elaborate 4 course meal with wine matching, if you want to get on top of all that washing that has been piled up then go for it. It’s your weekend, your staycation and your time. Enjoy it and do with it as you see fit.
