Vegetarian Sausage RollsThere’s nothing better than sausage rolls for lunch.  J has a thing for bakery sausage rolls, you could say that he’s a connoisseur.  We have two bakeries in our tiny town, I used to work at one of them, The Bakehouse, so you could say that I had an alliance to that bakery.

cottage cheese sausage rollsAt this time of year, our small town’s population triples and MY bakery gets busy.  Sometimes you could be waiting 30 mins to order and 45 mins to get your food.  So the other day J and our tradie, Matt, went to THE OTHER BAKERY!

vego sausage rollsNow I don’t agree, but J thinks the sausage rolls and pies are way better from the other bakery, but my allegiance still lies with the good old Bakehouse. However, these veggo ones trump the lot of them.

Vegetarian Sausage Rolls

Serves: 12
Ingredients
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbspn soy sauce
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 500 gm cottage cheese
  • puff pastry
Instructions
  1. Mix all ingredients together, except the puff pastry.
  2. Cut pastry sheets in half, and spoon mix down the long center of the pastry. fold both sides over the filling.
  3. Cut to desired lengths.
  4. Place on grease tray, brush with milk.
  5. Bake at 180 for about 30 mins, or until golden.

  1. I’ve never perfected sausage rolls (veggie or otherwise) but I noticed that the ones at CERES have barley in them and now you’re using oats – I sense grains may be the key component I need.

  2. Thanks for the recipe, these sound great, will be trying these. My kids love sausage rolls and also spinach and ricotta rolls so I always make a big batch to have on hand in the freezer.

  3. These do look very, very good. I’m very keen on sausage rolls too. There are lots of bakeries around me that sell sausage rolls but I’m not a fan of any of them. It’s quite difficult to find a decent sausage roll. I do love the look of yours though – excellent! I saw vegetarian sausage rolls in a store the other day and it inspired me to think about making them. I might just do that xx

  4. Halved the cottage cheese and added grated potato, apple and carrot for moisture (pretending to be on a diet!). Also added cumin and pepper for flavouring, and walnuts for protein. Turned out great! A fantastic recipe to make your own.
