When it rains, it pours, right? Over the last 8 months, the world (my world) has been inundated with beautiful new lives. I think I know of at least one baby a month to have been born over the last 8 months, some months there have been two or three.
After my struggles with breast feeding and the lack of sleep, I know that the best gift that you can get is some food and baked goods. I never had a night where I didn’t think that I could cook dinner, but it was so lovely to not have to.
So yesterday I got my cook and bake on and jumped in my car as Mumma Meals on Wheels, and delivered a batch of these lactation cookies and a lasagne to a second time new mum.
Lactation cookies aren’t made from mumma’s milk, they’re chock full of Galactagogue. What’s that you ask? They are ingredients that are said to promote milk supply. These key ingredients are: oats, ground flax seed, brewers yeast.
Do you do home delivery for new mum’s? Ever eaten a lactation cookie?
- 2 tbspn flax seed meal
- 4 tsbpn water
- 1 cup butter
- 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1 cup wholemeal plain flour
- 4 tbspn brewers yeast
- 1 tspn baking soda
- a pinch of salt
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup choc chips
- 1 cup sultanas
- Preheat oven to 180*C
- Mix flax seed and water in small bowl, set aside.
- Cream butter and sugar in mix master.
- Add eggs one at a time, until well combined.
- Add flax mixture, and vanilla, beat well.
- Add flour, yeast, baking soda and salt, mix until just combined.
- Stir through oats, chocolate and sultanas.
- Roll tablespoons of mix into a ball and place on baking tray, with about 2 cm between.
- Bake for 12 mins, cool on tray for 5 mins before transferring to cooling rack
How lovely of you to deliver a meal to a new mum. I think the best thing we can do for new mothers is cook for them. There are three times I cook for people – when there’s a new baby, when there’s sickness in the family and when they move house. I haven’t heard of lactation cookies but that’s a brilliant idea – they should serve them in the maternity wards xx

Your a superstar Clare, all new mums need meals cooked for them, the floor swept and a big hug. I was going to try and make some lactation cookies to see if I can get an afternoon burst in the supply. Perfect timing with this recipe thanks, just need to find some good brewers yeast.
